Biographical / Historical

What is a zine? Most zine creators resist established conventions regarding style, content, and production; however, zines do share many common characteristics. Zines are small-format, low-budget, inexpensive booklets that are self-published and ephemeral in nature. They are distributed though informal channels and can be purchased from small bookstores and zine distributors (distros), at zine fests, or directly from the creator. Often linked to a specific activity, lifestyle, or subculture, zines are a significant medium for expressing niche interests or viewpoints that are not typically represented in the mainstream media. Many zines feature topics such as identity, community, politics, and resistance, but they are also used to communicate personal experiences or for creative expression.

The Collins Library zine collection was acquired by the University of Puget Sound in July 2016 when Humanities Librarian Katy Curtis won a prize of 100 zines from the Zine Pavilion at the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference. This initial group of zines was the foundation for the Collins Library zine collection. We have continued to add zines to the collection that are created in or about our region, address local and national issues and social justice topics, and/or are authored by underrepresented individuals or groups. Several zines in the collection were created by University of Puget Sound students and groups.
