Ronald Fields collection on Abby Williams Hill
Scope and Contents
This collection includes research materials collected and created by Ronald Fields for his book, Abby Williams Hill and the lure of the West. The collection consists of three boxes of textual materials including one copy of the manuscript Notes form the Wilderness - Selected Journals of Abby Hill, the exhibition history of Hill's work up to 2010, research notes for Fields' book and other works on Hill, and biographical sketches of Abby Williams Hill written by Ronald Fields. Additionally, the collection contains transcriptions created by Fields of daybooks, journals, and correspondence written by Abby Williams Hill. Included are transcriptions of Hill's Mount Rainier and Hood Canal journal (1895), Germany journal (1895-1896), Vashon Island journal (1900, 1907), United States Tour journal and daybook (1901-1902), Great Northern Railway Commission daybook (1903), First Northern Pacific Railway Commission journal (1904), Northern Pacific Railway Commission journal (1905-1906), and Europe journal (1908), as well as letters from Hill to her husband Frank Hill.

Biographical Note
Ronald Fields is an emeritus professor in the art department faculty at the University of Puget Sound. He received his MA from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and his PhD from Ohio University in Athens. Fields worked with the University of Puget Sound Abby Williams Hill Collection for over 20 years. Abby Williams Hill (1861-1943) was a landscape artist and Tacoma resident. In 1989 the Washington State Historical Society published Fields' book, Abby Williams Hill and the lure of the West.
