Biographical / Historical

Established in 1951, with the first lecture in 1953, the Brown & Haley Lecture Series was created and operated with funding from the Brown & Haley candy company of Tacoma, Washington, and fully endowed by them in 1981. Organized and hosted by the University of Puget Sound, also in Tacoma. Each speaker gives a brief series of lectures on consecutive nights. Originally conducted annually, the lectureship is now on a biennial schedule, usually in February, in odd-numbered years. The Brown & Haley Lecture Committee, comprised of UPS faculty and a representative from Brown & Haley, selects the speakers.
