Scope and Contents

Contains Gould's letters from May 1878 to August 1881 and certain subject related letters of 1876 by M. Thome, the Annual Report of the Argentine Meteorological Office for 1874 and related observation documents in Spanish. In addition, there are various other letters concerning the Gould materials by University of Puget Sound (then College of Puget Sound) Professor Raymond Seward (and others) plus twelve photographs of the moon taken in October and November of 1918.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Apthorp Gould (September 27, 1824–November 26, 1896) was a pioneering American astronomer. He is notable for creating the Astronomical Journal, discovering the Gould Belt, and for founding of the Argentine National Observatory and the Argentine National Weather Service.

Abstract

Benjamin Apthorp Gould (1824-1896) was the founder and first editor of the Astronomical Journal. Gould was involved in the establishment and operation of the National Observatory at Córdoba, Argentina. The collection contains Gould's correspondence with M. Thome, reports, meteorological and astronomical information, and lunar photographs taken in 1918.
